What is Single Pair Ethernet (SPE)?

SPE is an Ethernet-based communication that forms the basis for a wide range of transmission protocols. The consistent concept enables direct communication between the sensor and the cloud, which allows individual stages of the automation pyramid to be combined and applications to be simplified.

How does Single Pair Ethernet work?

High flexibility with low cabling effort

Transmission speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s and cable lengths of up to 1000 m allow high flexibility with simultaneous high transmission rates. By using only one pair of wires ("single pair"), the cabling effort is considerably reduced and existing cabling can continue to be used. In addition, the individual sensors are supplied with power directly via the SPE line (PoDL = "Power over Data Line"), which further reduces the installation and cabling effort.
